Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Movie Review: A Weak Comedy Enters Ayushmann Khurrana's Filmography; Thank Neena Gupta For Some Respite
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan hit theatres this morning and I caught the first show of the film, frankly, with very low expectations. But did it meet my low expectations, surpassed them or was even worse? Let's find out
When the trailer of Ayushmann Khurrana-Jitendra Kumar's Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan hit the Internet, I thought to myself, 'Why does this film look identical to Ayushmann's all other previous films?' Is it because the supporting cast in his films is always the same, with a few additions and subtractions or has Ayushmann really got repetitive? As a result, my expectations with this one were quite low.
I caught the first day, first show of Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and with many doubts in my head about the film being good, surprisingly had my first laugh in the very first 5 minutes. It was a conversation between a mother (played by Neena Gupta) and her son, Aman (portrayed by Jitendra Kumar).
From thereon, the first half had its moments where I genuinely cracked up, while the second half fell flat and brought the pace down. At some point you feel that the director (Hitesh Kewalya) doesn't have much to show anymore, and frankly there wasn't really.
Interestingly, most of the scenes which turned out to be the highlights of the film were picturised on Neena Gupta, Gajraj Rao, Manu Rishi Chadha (plays Gajraj Rao's younger brother) and Sunita Rajwar (plays Manu Rishi's wife). Which gets us to the lead actor- Ayushmann Khurrana- an average performance by the actor for the first time. Maanvi Gagroo will tickle your funny bone with her performance as the actress delivers her part well.
Ayushmann left me confused about the way he played the homosexual character of Kartik- was it because he was following the director's vision to the T or did Khurrana just go overboard with his antics? I feel Ayushmann has given such impeccable performances in the past that this one somehow does't meet the standards.
Film's second lead- Jitendra Kumar- most of you know him as the 'Viral Fever guy', was a pleasant surprise. He balanced out the story well and his restrain was much-needed and implemented brilliantly.
For me, as mentioned earlier, Neena Gupta is the hero of the film. The lady is just getting better with every damn film she is doing. What timing, what dialogue delivery and expressions! Gajraj Rao supports her well.
Hitesh Kewalya has given a humorous angle to a sensitive subject and in the most serious scenes of the film too, kept the lightness intact. Wouldn't brag too much about the direction and screenplay as such.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan is not preachy for sure and not the best comedy film either. So, if you're in a mood for a light, harmless, funny in bits and parts sort of a film, then go for it, else take a rain check. My verdict is 2.5 stars.
